“Wombramurra Black Simmentals have established the largest Gateway genetics based herd in Australia and can now offer a large range of Black Simmental bulls for use in commercial herds.”

Why Black Simmentals?
- Finally a European breed that offers Black and polled cattle developed to ensure greater profits to the cattle breeder.
- Black is important because of the premium it attracts in the market place.
- Black Simmentals offer an overall superior package when compared to other European breeds (Refer Table 2)
- Excellent growth, finishing ability, and saleable yield with a superior carcase allows Black Simmental progeny diverse marketing options.
- Results of ultrasound scanning and Gene Star scores for marbling and tenderness confirm a superior carcase to traditional Simmentals
- Superior fertility, calving ease and maternal traits, coupled with a more moderate mature cow weight result in a European bred female more suited to the Australian environment.
- An excellent option to introduce ‘profit driven genetics’ for crossbreeding programmes for both British and Bos Indicus herds.
- Results of the American Simmental Association carcase testing programme highlights the marbling and yield attributes of the Simmental/Angus cross. (Refer Table 1)

Note: Gateway have been selecting for carcase merit for 20 years. It is therefore relevant that in 2007 and 2008 the kill data Gateway collected for all grades from F1 Simmental to purebred Simmental averaged a 79% marble score 3 or better.
