Welcome to the Wombramurra Black Simmental website
Wombramurra Black Simmental stud is owned and operated by Peter & Judy Howarth and Andrew & Trudy Chapman on a 5000 acre property in Nundle, NSW, Australia.
Following the recent sale of Wombramurra homestead the partners have accelerated the move into Black Simmentals with cattle numbers growing rapidly due in part to twice yearly Embryo Transfer (ET) and Artificial Insemination (AI) programmes.
Black Simmentals are an extremely exciting development in the stud cattle industry. Black Simmentals – why? In the early 1990’s Simmental breeders in the US sought to change their breed so that it better captured the market essentials important to the cattle industry and the consumer. Simmentals already possessed excellent maternal traits, growth and yield. Why not add to this the eating quality of Angus, polledness, earlier maturity, no eye cancers and calving ease? The answer was to ‘invent’ the Black Simmental by breeding up from Angus and simultaneously increasing fertility and survivability.
This decision in the US has been so spectacularly successful that their Simmental Magazine now features about 75% Black Simmentals 20% solid Reds and only 5% traditionals! We believe they have achieved their objectives and these cattle are now poised to have a large impact on the Australian market.
It is our objective to offer in excess of 50 Black Simmental and Black Simmental/Angus bulls every year. In 2010 we will offer approximately 40 Black Simmental Bulls and 10 Black Simmental/Angus Bulls.

Wombramurra Black Simmentals Breeding Programme
- In 2003 Peter Howarth started researching the Black Simmental market in America
- The Black Simmental was found to offer a complete package of ‘profit driven genetics’
- After extensive research the best genetics for the Australian market were sourced from Gateway Simmentals, Montana.
- We have had access to twenty years of the renowned Gateway Black Simmental genetics which they have developed and stabilised since 1989.
- Gateway have selected for fertility, calving ease and quality carcasses at the same time retaining the superior Simmental and Angus traits
- Our first Gateway embryo calves were born in July 2005, and since have implanted large numbers of embryos using Gateway imported genetics and undertaken extensive AI programmes.
- Starting in 2008 we were able to source and use outcross Black Simmental Bulls from other US studs which also offered ‘profit driven genetics’
- As a result of very sucessfull AI and ET programmes our numbers have increased rapidly allowing us to exercise ruthless selection pressure ensuring a quality line up of bulls each year

“Our dilemma of finding a European breed that would improve growth, muscle shape and saleable yield in our crossbred bull breeding herd without detracting from the all important maternal traits has been solved by the Gateway Simmental.
Gateway has moderated the frame thereby maintaining pressure on the maternal issues and doability. Because marbling and tenderness are two of Gateway’s major selective criteria this new European breed also possesses superior eating qualities.
Wombramurra Black Simmentals have established the largest Gateway genetics based herd in Australia and can now offer a large range of Black Simmental bulls for use in commercial herds.”
